Resident: James L. Terry

Where did you grow up?  James Terry was born on December 20, 1921 in Cumming Georgia but he grew up Athens, Georgia in Clark County.  He grew up the 3rd youngest child in a family of 13 children.  Today, all of his brothers and sisters are deceased.  James graduated from High School in May 1941.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  James states that he grew up a country boy in Athens, Georgia, Clark County, Georgia and he loved to fish and loved farming with the family farm growing a number of different crops throughout the year with them growing corn and cotton and wheat as the winter crop.  He states that his father was in the construction business building houses and so he and his brothers ran the farm.  He also enjoyed playing sports with him playing basketball and baseball.  James graduated from High School in May 1941 and then he joined the Army in 1941 and was involved in WWII and stayed in the Army for 3 years and then returned home.

What are some of your favorite memories from your adulthood?  James states that he met his future wife Betty Ingle and they dated for I year and then got married in June 1949 and they are married to the present time.  They had 4 children 3 boys and 1 girl and he has 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.  James states that in his adulthood he has continued to enjoy fishing and gardening with him always enjoying having a large garden.  

Did you have a profession?  James’s jobs in life have included working in the family grocery store for 30 years and he also helped a brother in law in his construction business building houses for 15 years and he also worked at Henry Medical Center for 20 years  in the Maintenance Department until he retired around 2007.

Which accomplishments in your life do you feel most proud?  James states that he is most proud of his marriage with him being married to his wife Betty since 1949 and he is proud of his 4 children 3 boys and 1 girl and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  

Is there anything you’ve learned in life you wish to share with someone who is just graduating college?  James stated “build a home of love which is the foundation of life.  If you don’t have love then you don’t have a home but just a house.”

Is there anything you’ve learned in life you wish to share with someone who is just starting a family?  James stated “couples have to cooperate with each other.  If you don’t cooperate with each other then you don’t have a happy family.”

What brought you do Dogwood Forest?  James’s family states that James was living in his home but after the family placed his wife in an assisted living facility they found that James was not really taking care of himself adequately at home and so they found placement for James at Dogwood Forest of Eagles Landing.  James indicates that he likes it OK here at Dogwood Forest with the staff being nice to him and he likes the other Residents who live here also.
