Resident Spotlight: Mary Gilmer Rainwater

Where did you grow up?  Mary was born on February 3, 1931 in Gainesville Georgia and she lived in Gainesville until she was 10-11 years old. Her family then moved to Hapeville, Georgia where she spent the rest of her childhood.  She grew up the 3rd oldest child with 2 brothers and 1 sister and today she has 1 brother and 1 sister living.  Mary graduated from Hapeville High School and attended secretarial school in Atlanta, Georgia.  maryrainwater

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  One of Mary’s favorite memories from her childhood is getting out of school and taking her Daddy, who she loved very much. She enjoyed eating cornbread and buttermilk while he was working on the farm.  Another favorite memory from her childhood is running to church after Sunday School to sit by her mother and listen to her sing. They attended a Baptist church in Gainesville, Georgia.

What are some of your favorite memories from your adulthood?  Mary was introduced to her future husband, Dawsie Rainwater, by Dawsie’s sister who Mary was friends with. Mary and Dawsie married in November 1947 when Mary was only 16 years old. They were happily married until he passed away in December 2015.  They had 3 wonderful children; 2 boys and 1 girl. Another good memory from adulthood was taking family vacations to Daytona Beach Florida every year, where they stayed and ate at the same places.

Did you have a profession?  Mary was a secretary/bookkeeper for a total of 45 years, working for a few different companies.  

Which accomplishments in your life do you feel most proud?  Mary is most proud of her 3 wonderful children, 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, and being married to the same man for 68 years.

Is there anything you’ve learned in life you wish to share with someone who is just graduating college?  Mary was known to say “ Life doesn’t always turn out like you planned and sometimes you have to change your plans.”

Is there anything in life you wish to share with someone who is just starting a family?  Mary says “Never go to bed mad and every day pray for your family.”
How do you enjoy Dogwood Forest as your new home?  Mary seems to be adjusting well to being at Dogwood Forest.
