Resident Spotlight: Macie Sewell

Where did you grow up? Macie Sewell was born on April 14, 1928 in Hart County, Hartwell, Georgia. She and her family lived in Hartwell until she was almost a teenager, and then they moved to Franklin County where she spent the rest of her growing up years there. She grew up the third oldest child with two older brothers and one younger sister. Her two older brothers are deceased and the younger sister is living. Macie attended and graduated from Lavonia High School in Franklin County. She did not attend college.
What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? Macie states that she remembers in the fall that she and her other brothers and sister had to help pick cotton with their father being a farmer. She also remembers that when her father sold the first bail of cotton each year, her mother would take her and her sister to Hartwell Georgia and buy them school clothes for the year. That was always very special to Macie. She also has a very good memory of making her profession of faith at church when she was 12 years old.
What are some of your favorite memories from your adulthood? Macie states that one of her best memories from adulthood is when she was allowed to start dating when she was 16 years old. She began dating her future husband, Howard Sewell, with both families knowing each other all of her life. When Macie was 18 years old and just graduated from High School, she married Howard on November 9, 1946. Two years after they got married there one and only son, Larry, was born. Macie has lived for the past 60 years in her home in Dekalb County near North Dekalb Mall.
Did you have a profession? Macie said that after she graduated from high school, she went to work for a northeast bank as a teller which she did until her son was born. After that, she stayed at home and was a full time wife and mother for the rest of her life.
Which accomplishment in life are you most proud of? Macie states that she is most proud of being married to her wonderful husband Howard for 52 wonderful years. She has one son, two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of which she is very proud of.
Is there anything you’ve learned in life you wish to share with someone who is just graduating from college? Macie says “the most important decision that you will ever make is to become a Christian.”
Is there anything you’ve learned in life you wish to share with someone who is just starting a family? Macie says “raise your children to know right from wrong, and get everyone in the family involved in Christian activities.”
What brought you to Dogwood Forest? Macie states that she lived by herself, in her home in Dekalb County for the past 8 years since her husband died, but has had severe back problems for years. She had decided on her own to stop driving herself in her car because she didn’t think she was safe driving. Her son and granddaughter who help her live in the McDonough, Georgia area, and she wanted to be closer to them. When her son and granddaughter started looking at assisted living facilities in the area, they visited Dogwood Forest and really liked it, so Macie and her family decided to come to Dogwood Forest. Macie says that she likes being at Dogwood Forest a lot and the other Residents and staff have been very nice to her.
