Resident Spotlight: Barbara Ann Williams Bradley

Where did you grow up?  Barbara was born at home on November 11, 1935 in Atlanta Georgia; she also grew up in Atlanta.  She was the middle child with one sister and one brother.  Today, both her sister and brother are deceased.  Barbara states that she completed the 9th or 10th grade but did not graduate from high school. Photo Barbara Bradley

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  Barbara states that when she was growing up she loved going to Oakland City Park in the summer and swimming in their pool close to her home. She also has good memories of playing with other neighborhood children.

What are some of your favorite memories from your adulthood?  Barbara states that she met her future husband, James Bradley, when she was very young. He worked in the produce department of the A & P Grocery store, where Barbara would go often with her grandmother. James saw her and asked her for her phone number so he could call her.  Barbara states that she married James Bradley when she was 15 years old on March 31, 1951 and they were happily married for 52 years until he died in 2003.  They had 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl.  Barbara states that she also has good memories of traveling and boating and having a good time.

Did you have a profession?  Barbara states that for a time she worked in a school cafeteria serving food, but says she mostly stayed home and was a housewife and mother.

Which accomplishment in life do you feel most proud?  Barbara states that she is most proud of her talent painting. She has many things that she has painted over the years.  She is also very proud of her 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  She also is proud the 3 long time friendships that she has had over a very long period of her life.

Is there anything you’ve learned over your life that you wish to share with someone who is just graduating college?  Barbara stated the best advice she could give people is to be sure that the people that you have contact with are good people that have good character.  

Is there anything you’ve learned in life you wish to share with someone who is just starting a family?  Barbara states that the best advice she could give someone planning to have a family is to think seriously if they really want to bring someone into this world.  She states that she worries about the world that her grandchildren and great grandchildren have to live in, and it is very important to take care of your kids.  She states that she was lucky to have good kids that have good jobs and good families.

What brought you to Dogwood Forest?  Barbara says that she is in Dogwood Forest because her kids don’t think she should live alone.  She states that she had lived by herself, but had fallen and stayed on the floor for a long period of time and she had hurt herself and now needed to be in a place where people could look after her.  Barbara states that she likes it OK here at Dogwood Forest, that the people are nice to her and she enjoys being around other people, but also enjoys spending time by herself in her room doing what she wants to do.
