on February 16th, 2016 in Spirit | No Comments
Ask anyone who has been in a relationship for more than a couple years, and they will all tell you the same thing: Love is tough. It takes a lot of work to make sure a marriage remains fruitful and strong. But that hard work is what makes loving one another worth it, as Mary and Ben Mitek know. This couple has been married for over 60 years. They have been through a lot together, and have found themselves deeply in love through it all. We had a chance to sit down with them and talk to them about their lives and ageless love.
Roots Of Love
Ben: We’ve been together for 63 years.
Interviewer: Sixty three years? That’s a long time. And she’s still smiling.
Ben: Why wouldn’t she?
Interviewer: That’s wonderful.
Ben: She makes me smile.
Interviewer: How did you guys meet?
Mary: I was playing in a nightclub in Philadelphia and New Jersey. Like with dancing and music and all that. It was his mother’s and father’s 25th anniversary. He got right up and said, “Stop everything, I just found the girl I’m going to marry.” And then he told everybody in there. Goodness, I was hiding.
Ben: I had fallen in love with her one year earlier, but I decided that it was after the one year that was it. I was waiting for her and from that moment on it was her and always has been.
Interviewer: What are your tips for making a long lasting relationship?
Ben: As far as a lasting relationship goes, with no end to it. There is always a lasting relationship there.
Mary: Maybe the best answer I ever heard.
Ben: And she’s the best reward is, really, fantastically.
Making a Relationship Last
Interviewer: What is the best relationship advice you have ever received?
Interviewer: Oh, it’s that simple?
Ben: It’s that simple.
Interviewer: Wonderful. Do you agree with that, Miss Mary? Be honest and that’s it?
Mary: It really is.
Interviewer: What advice would you give to newlyweds?
Mary: I would be so happy for them. I would tell them how happy I am, that’s all.
Ben: To fall on us in the sense, and you will make it easier on yourself in the future. All you’ve got to do is be honest.
Mary: But you have to make your life. Not walk in, drop in, bang in and walk out.
Ben: Yeah. It’s part of life. There is no end to it, there is no beginning to it. It just goes on.
Interviewer: You guys have my favorite love story I think I have ever heard. Beautiful.
Ben: Well it’s not something that we have treated lightly. It is something that we held very close and dear to our hearts.
Life is Easy Together
Interviewer: Really? Oh my goodness. Quite the romantic.
Mary: Those are my favorite flowers. I always got a black orchid.
Interviewer: They are beautiful. Good job, Ben. Good job.
Ben: It’s not hard.
Interview: Once you know.
Ben: When you know exactly what you want to do.
Mary: We always stay together at least two nights.
Interviewer: That’s why you… (laughs) Wonderful. Any other advice that you can give about marriage? About love?
Ben: It’s easy.
Mary: Yeah, just that it happened to me like it was yesterday.
Interviewer: Like yesterday?
Ben: Love rewards if you don’t go searching for it. It feels like it’s always been there. All you’ve got to do is enjoy it. Life is that easy.
Interviewer: People should think more like that, shouldn’t they Ben? They make it too complicated.
Ben: Yeah, there’s no complications to it. It’s easy.
Mary: I got the best.
Ben: No, we share the best. No need to look for it. It has always been there. Love is easy, especially if you don’t go searching for it.
