Resident Spotlight: Meet Mrs. Birdie

Where did you grow up?

Birdie was born December 18, 1936, in Henry County, Georgia, and she grew up in Henry County also. She grew up the youngest child in a family with two half-sisters and one half-brother and one sister. Her sister is still living.

What are some of your favorite memories from childhood?

Birdie’s  favorite childhood memory is going with all of her family to a river in Henry County in the summer to go swimming to escape the heat and her family would take a picnic and spend the day swimming in the river. She also remembers her dad at Halloween getting a flatbed truck and putting hay in the back and the family would go to a Halloween party together and have a good time.

Resident Spotlight: Mickey Maddox

Where did you grow up?

Mickey states that she was born and raised in Wrens, Georgia, on April 6, 1927. She grew up one of the middle children in a family with 8 girls and 3 boys. Today she has 2 sisters living. She received a high school education and she attended Atlanta Business School.

What are some of your favorite memories from childhood? 

Mickey states that one of her favorite memories from childhood was that during the summer, her family would make homemade ice cream with a hand-cranked ice cream maker. The older children would crank the ice cream while the younger children would plan, and then everyone would eat the ice cream together. She also remembers that some of her cousins would come to visit and the kids would play and eat together.

Resident Spotlight: Virginia ‘Jinnie’ McCord

Where did you grow up? Jinnie was born January 25, 1921, and grew up in Atlanta. She was the youngest child with three brothers and one sister. She attended and graduated from Atlanta Girls High and attended and graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia, with a degree in home economics. 

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? Jinnie states that her favorite memories from her childhood were being with her family, her wonderful parents and she was especially close to her oldest brother with her remembering him coming home from work and reading to her when she was young.

Resident Spotlight: Humberto Quintana

Where did you grow up? Humberto was born October 26, 1919, in Cayey, Puerto Rico, while his father was in U.S. military. At age 8, Humberto and his family moved to Governor’s Island, New York, where he lived until he went away to college. Humberto had four brothers and one sister, but all of his siblings are now dead. Humberto was an excellent student growing up, attending famous private school Scarborough. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and received a master’s degree from Furman University.

What are some of your favorite memories from childhood? Humberto was an excellent student and received a medal for top academics after 8th grade and Eleanor Roosevelt presented him with the medal of excellence. Where did you grow up? Carolyn was born on Dec. 10, 1925 in Stockbridge, Georgia, and she also grew up in Stockbridge with one older brother. She graduated from Henry County High School and took some business courses from a school in Atlanta, Georgia.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? Carolyn stated that when she was growing up Stockbridge was a small community and she knew everyone in town and everyone in town knew her. She lived right across the street from the school that she attended and she would go home for lunch every day. She would first go to her aunt’s house, who lived right next door to her, and find out what she was having for lunch. Where did you grow up?

Blanche states that she was born on August 26, 1935 in Managua, Nicaragua and grew up in that same area.  She grew up the oldest child with 3 sisters and 1 brother.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? 

Blanche states that some of her favorite memories from her childhood were various activities that her family would do together as a group like bowling or going to the movies.

What are some of your favorite memories from your adulthood? 

Blanche states that some of her favorite memories from adulthood including dating and then getting married to her husband Al Triunfo.  They got married on June 14, 1955.  They had 3 children 2 girls and 1 boy and she also has 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren that she is very proud of.… Read more...

Embracing Person Centered Care

Finding a place for your loved one could be difficult. It is a challenging process filled with emotion and confusion. Many people get overwhelmed. This is all understandable considering you are often looking for a place that will impact your  mother’s, father’s or grandparents quality of life. After all, this might have been the same person that ensured your quality of life, seemingly just a short time ago. We at Dogwood Forest Assisted Living in Stockbridge are certainly empathetic to this emotional challenge.  While the process can leave your head spinning with assisted living terminology, there is one phrase that you have probably heard and should definitely understand, “person centered-care.”

Resident Spotlight: Dorothy Beaty

Where did you grow up?

Dorothy grew up in West Union, South Carolina.  She was born on May 12, 1910 and so this year will be 102 on her birthday.  She grew up with one younger sister who was 10 years younger than her who died recently. 

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? 

Dorothy states that one of her favorite memories from childhood was visiting her grandparents in Union, New York.  She remembers that family would travel by train to New York and it was a thrill to sleep on the train.  She has wonderful memories of visiting grandparents and other family memories as well.  Some of her family lived on a lake and it was fun to swim in the lake in the summer time.

Resident Spotlight: Bonnie Harvey

Where did you grow up? Bonnie grew up in Falconer, New York.   She was born on March 12, 1932.  She had one older brother growing up.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? Bonnie states that she enjoyed going to visit her grandparents who  lived in Sandusky, New York.  She states that they lived on a hill and had no electricity or running water.  She remembers her grandmother making homemade goodies and deserts and she remembers grandmother would save newspapers with comics in them and she and her brother would read those comics while visiting grandparents.  She remembers that her father ran a meat market and was a preacher.  She had a close friend and close friend had a sister and the three of them sang in a trio and they would be invited to sing all … Read more...
