Resident Spotlight: Wendell Oliver Holmes

Where did you grow up?  Wendell was born on January 10, 1940 in Birmingham Alabama and he grew up the same area that he was born in.  He grew up the youngest child with 6 brothers and 1 sister.  He completed high school and attended the University of Alabama but stopped going to school to join the Marines with the intention of going back to school later, but was not able to do that.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  Wendell’s family was involved in southern gospel music and he was in several different quartets over the years.  He was named Vocalist of the Year in high school and was MVP of his high school basketball team his senior year of high school.

Where did you grow up?  Martha was born on July 28, 1931 in East Point, Georgia where she grew up.  She was the middle child with two sisters.  She graduated from Russell High School in her hometown.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  Martha says that one of her favorite memories from childhood was playing baseball in the street with the neighborhood children.  She also recalls getting new doll for Christmas; which was always a special time for her growing up.

What are some of your favorite memories from your adulthood?  Martha states that one of her favorite memories from adulthood was meeting her future husband, Jack Thompson.  They met when they were both working for Southern Bell. Where did you grow up? I was born on February 14, 1934 in Senoia, Georgia, but grew up in the Atlanta area. I had one sister; however, she passed away several years ago. I received a high school education graduating from Southwest DeKalb High School.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? I remember when I was a child, going to visit my grandparents in Fairburn, Georgia. They lived on a farm, and my grandfather would do a lot of fun things with me. I remember my grandmother was a very good cook, and I would have good food to eat while visiting them.

Where did you grow up?  James Terry was born on December 20, 1921 in Cumming Georgia but he grew up Athens, Georgia in Clark County.  He grew up the 3rd youngest child in a family of 13 children.  Today, all of his brothers and sisters are deceased.  James graduated from High School in May 1941.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  James states that he grew up a country boy in Athens, Georgia, Clark County, Georgia and he loved to fish and loved farming with the family farm growing a number of different crops throughout the year with them growing corn and cotton and wheat as the winter crop.  He states that his father was in the construction business building houses and so he and his brothers ran the farm.  He also enjoyed playing sports with … Read more...

Where did you grow up? Mary Jo was born on May 25, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia and she grew up in the Grant Park area of Atlanta. She grew up an only child. She received a high school education growing up attending Girls High.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? Mary Jo’s favorite memories from childhood are related to spending time in Grant Park and doing various activities and she was very active and involved at Grant Park Baptist Church.

Where did you grow up?  Sara states that she was born on November 3, 1930 in Cherokee County Georgia at home and she grew up in Cherokee County also.  She grew up the middle child with 2 older brothers and 1 younger sister and 1 younger brother.  Today, just the 1 sister is still living.  Sara graduated from Canton High School in 1948 and she went 1 year to Southern Business University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Where did you grow up? Grace was born in Washington DC on March 15, 1925 and she grew up in Washington DC /Maryland. She grew up the middle child with 2 sisters and then her Mom had two other children a girl and a boy from another marriage. Grace states that the half sister and half brother are about the same age as her children. Grace attended a one and two room school and graduated from High School.

Where did you grow up? Trudie was born on October 13, 1926 in Waycross Georgia and she grew up in Waycross, Georgia. She was the youngest child with 2 sisters and 1 brother. She graduated from Waycross High School. While in High School, Trudie was involved in the theater and performed in a play with her classmate Pernell Roberts who later starred in TV show Bonanza.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? Trudie states that her father worked for the railroad and they were able to get train passes to be able to travel and she has good memories of traveling places with her family. Where did you grow up?

Linda was born on July 1937 in Alma, Alabama. She lived most of her life in the same town where she was born. She was the oldest child with one sister and one brother. Linda received a High School education and taken some college courses.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood? Linda’s favorite memories from childhood included riding her horse Raven, spending time with her Daddy, reading and spending time with her best friend Patsy who lived next door. They were always together.

What are some of your favorite memories from your adulthood? Linda’s favorite memories from her adulthood included loving to travel. She and her husband went to Europe several times, as well as Israel, Mexico and Canada. She loved painting, and she led exercise classes.
