Resident Spotlight: Helen Russo

Where did you grow up?  Helen Russo was born on June 11, 1932 in Brooklyn New York, where she grew up.  She was the oldest child with two younger brothers. Today, only one brother is living.  Helen finished high school but did not attend college.  

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  Helen states that she loved her mother and her brothers so much.  She has good memories of Christmastime while growing up, with good food and giving and receiving presents.  She also has good memories of summer time in New York, specifically when fireman would come and open the fire hydrants so the kids could play in the water.

Where did you grow up?  Billie Lowe was born on 9/8/25 in Atlanta, Georgia and he grew up in the Atlanta area.  He grew up the middle child with 1 brother and 1 sister.  Billie graduated from Hapeville High School.

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  Billie states that growing up he loved to fish, mainly for bass, in any lake he could find to fish from.  He also loved motocross racing and he would go to see the racing in Hampton, Georgia any time he could. 

What are some of your favorite memories from your adulthood?  Billie states that he loves baseball and would go see the Atlanta Braves play at Fulton County Stadium as often as he was able.  Another favorite memory for Billie is meeting and getting married to Betty Lowe. They got … Read more...

Where did you grow up?  Barbara was born at home on November 11, 1935 in Atlanta Georgia; she also grew up in Atlanta.  She was the middle child with one sister and one brother.  Today, both her sister and brother are deceased.  Barbara states that she completed the 9th or 10th grade but did not graduate from high school. 

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  Barbara states that when she was growing up she loved going to Oakland City Park in the summer and swimming in their pool close to her home. She also has good memories of playing with other neighborhood children.

Where did you grow up?  Betty was born on June 15, 1934 in Atlanta, Georgia and lived there while she grew up.  She was the 3rd oldest in a family of 9 children.  Betty graduated from Russel High School in East Point, Georgia.  

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  Betty states that, being in a family with 9 children, she always had other children to play with. She was part of a family that really loved each other.  She said that she always played hopscotch and made up games with other children in the neighborhood.

What are some of your favorite memories from your adulthood?  Betty states that her future husband Robert Steadham lived in the same area that she did growing up. He was good friends with her brother. When Robert returned from his time … Read more...

Where did you grow up?  Macie Sewell was born on April 14, 1928 in Hart County, Hartwell, Georgia. She and her family lived in Hartwell until she was almost a teenager, and then they moved to Franklin County where she spent the rest of her growing up years there.  She grew up the third oldest child with two older brothers and one younger sister.  Her two older brothers are deceased and the younger sister is living.  Macie attended and graduated from Lavonia High School in Franklin County. She did not attend college.  

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  Macie states that she remembers in the fall that she and her other brothers and sister had to help pick cotton with their father being a farmer.  She also remembers that when her father sold the first bail … Read more...

Where did you grow up?  Mary was born on February 3, 1931 in Gainesville Georgia and she lived in Gainesville until she was 10-11 years old. Her family then moved to Hapeville, Georgia where she spent the rest of her childhood.  She grew up the 3rd oldest child with 2 brothers and 1 sister and today she has 1 brother and 1 sister living.  Mary graduated from Hapeville High School and attended secretarial school in Atlanta, Georgia.  

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  One of Mary’s favorite memories from her childhood is getting out of school and taking her Daddy, who she loved very much. Where did you grow up?  Ethel was born in Fayette County, Georgia and when she was 11 years old, her family moved to Clayton County.  She grew up the third oldest child in the family with 6 sisters and 2 brothers. Today 5 of the brothers and sisters are still living.  Ethel graduated from Jonesboro High School, and took some business college courses Massey Business College.  

What are some of your favorite memories from your childhood?  Ethel’s family states that Ethel grew up on a farm and remembers picking cotton as a child.  Ethel also has good memories of attending school while growing up, but otherwise had to work a lot on the farm while growing up.
