While this may sound expensive, Medicare often covers the first 100 days in treatment. However, there are stipulations to that coverage: the hospital stay must last at least three days, and your loved one must begin treatment at an approved facility within 30 days.
Ideally, skilled nursing facilities are for patients who need 24-hour care, but only for a relatively short time. If your loved one needs long-term care, the next two options may be better choices.
IN-HOME CARE
There are two general types of in-home care: home health and home care. Medical professionals provide home health. They help perform a specific task, such as physical therapy. This care is usually covered by Medicare or insurance. Home care, on the other hand, is a service in which a nurse takes care of your loved one in various capacities.
Depending on what your loved one needs, home care workers may perform simple tasks around the house, provide care for elders with dementia, or fill a host of other roles. In addition, there is also 24-hour in-home care available for seniors who may need more help.
ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES
If your loved one is currently living in an assisted living community, they may be able to recover from their hospital stay there.
