Finding the Right Post-Hospital Care for Seniors

For younger people, a trip to the hospital often results in a simple discharge, maybe a couple of days of rest, and then continuing with life as usual. But for seniors, the recovery process is often much longer. They may need physical therapy, nursing care, and other services to fully recover. Many seniors find their health worsens without professional assistance after a hospital visit.

The good news is there are a few different options for post-hospital care. What kind of services you choose depends on many factors, including price, availability, and personal preference. Read on to learn about these different options.

REHAB CENTERS/SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES

A skilled nursing facility may be the best option if your loved one will require around-the-clock care while they recover. While this may sound expensive, Medicare often covers the first 100 days in treatment. However, there are stipulations to that coverage: the hospital stay must last at least three days, and your loved one must begin treatment at an approved facility within 30 days.

Ideally, skilled nursing facilities are for patients who need 24-hour care, but only for a relatively short time. If your loved one needs long-term care, the next two options may be better choices.

IN-HOME CARE

There are two general types of in-home care: home health and home care. Medical professionals provide home health. They help perform a specific task, such as physical therapy. This care is usually covered by Medicare or insurance. Home care, on the other hand, is a service in which a nurse takes care of your loved one in various capacities.

Depending on what your loved one needs, home care workers may perform simple tasks around the house, provide care for elders with dementia, or fill a host of other roles. In addition, there is also 24-hour in-home care available for seniors who may need more help.

ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES

If your loved one is currently living in an assisted living community, they may be able to recover from their hospital stay there. Many assisted living communities have the staff and equipment needed to help your loved one recover, all while in the comfort of the place they now call home. From physical therapy to assistance with meal preparation and bathing, these communities can make sure your loved one is fully taken care of.
